Edward Waters (1835-1902)

Who was Edward Waters?  This is a question that has been nagging at me for over a year. He was my great-great grandfather. However, I have had very little luck finding any information on him before 1886 when he was married in Milwaukee, WI. According to the 1900 census, he was born in or around 1835 in Ohio. There is actually a very detailed account of the Waters family in Ohio around this time period. I scrubbed these documents and books clean; however, no persons named Edward or Edwin or even just Ed could be found.

I decided I needed more information on his death than the Wisconsin Vital Records could provide. I searched for an obituary in the Milwaukee Journal and other newspapers in the area and came up empty. It wasn’t until I did a general search of all newspapers and found the above mortuary notice posted in the Wisconsin Weekly Advocate (an African American publication) that everything clicked.

“A colored man.”  That explains why I have so little information on him before 1886. Perhaps he was a slave?
